PARENT-INVOLVED THERAPY FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN

A respectful, relationship-based approach that supports regulation, connection, and flexibility

Autistic children often experience the world as overwhelming, unpredictable, or exhausting to navigate. What may be labeled as “challenging behaviour” is often a response to sensory overload, anxiety, communication differences, or unmet support needs.

This work does not aim to change who your child is. Instead, therapy focuses on supporting regulation, reducing stress, strengthening connection, and helping families better understand what their child’s behaviour is communicating.

Parent involvement is central. When parents understand why behaviours occur and how to respond in attuned, supportive ways, children feel safer—and meaningful change becomes possible.

Throughout this page, I use identity-first language (e.g., “autistic child”). This reflects the preferences expressed by many autistic adults and aligns with neurodiversity-affirming practice. I also respect that families and individuals may use different language, and I follow each family’s preferences in sessions.

Therapeutic Approach

I use a play-based, neurodiversity-affirming approach, drawing from:

  • Child-Centred Play Therapy (CCPT) to support emotional expression and autonomy

  • Filial Therapy to strengthen the parent-child relationship and empower parents as agents of change

  • AutPlay-informed interventions, which integrate play, visual supports, and structured flexibility to support social understanding, emotional regulation, and sensory needs

  • Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) to reduce power struggles and address lagging skills through collaboration rather than compliance

Intervention is individualized and responsive to your child’s sensory profile, communication style, and developmental level.
