Frequently Asked Questions: play therapy

Please reach us at info@insideouttherapy.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A therapy session at Inside Out Therapy is 45 minutes in length.

Free 15 minute virtual consultation:

Nadia welcomes a free consultation with all new clients to meet and to help answer any questions that you may have prior to scheduling your first counselling session.

Initial appointment - parent intake:

All services begin with this appointment type. Our first appointment will be an opportunity to discuss your hopes for therapy openly without your child present, to discuss ways to explain therapy to your child, and to start developing treatment goals.

If you are ready to begin counselling services, please go ahead and book your first appointment. Once booked, Inside Out Therapy will reach out with intake forms and to help answer any questions you may have before the appointment.

Before your child's first session, we will meet without your little one so that we can openly discuss their needs. During our first appointment, we’ll also assist you in finding the right words to discuss this with your child.

Many parents wonder how to discuss psychological services with their child. We’ve found that most children recognize when they’re experiencing difficulties and appreciate the idea that someone will help them. Because our approach is centred on play, children often enjoy their visits. We recommend explaining to your child that a therapist can help people with big feelings. Just like the name of our clinic - we will help them bring the inside out.

If your child is coming for therapy, be open, honest, and age-appropriate in your explanation. For instance, if your child struggles with anxiety, you can let them know that we’re here to help with their worries.

We also have a virtual introduction video on our homepage can be shown to your little one to help introduce them to the clinic space and their therapist. Please see our welcome video on the home page.

Play therapy allows children to express their world through the universal language of play.

In Our Play Therapy Sessions:

  • Finding their voice: Just as adults find comfort in conversation, children find their voice in play.
  • A Path to Resilience: Through the gentle guidance of play, we explore ways for your child to navigate life’s storms, turning challenges into stepping stones for growth.
  • A Bridge of Understanding: Play is the bridge that helps your child communicate even when feelings are too big for words.
  • A Celebration of Self: Each small triumph in our sessions is a building block for your child’s self-esteem, crafting a foundation of confidence that will extend beyond our walls.
  • A Puzzle Solved Together: Problem-solving through the language of play allows the child to think of difficult scenarios as quest that we can help them to conquer.
  • A Healing Touch: For hearts that have seen too much, play therapy offers a gentle way to process and heal from life’s unexpected turns.

And for Parents:

  • A Window to Your Child’s World: Gain precious insights into the heart and mind of your child, understanding them in ways that words alone cannot reveal.
  • A Guide by Your Side: We’re here to walk with you, offering strategies that resonate with your child’s unique spirit and the challenges you face together.
  • A Bond That Grows: Discover new ways to connect with your child.
  • A Compass for Your Journey: Receive tailored advice to navigate the specific landscapes of your child’s experiences.

A 45 minute therapy session costs $150. Services are provided by a Registered Social Worker and may be reimbursable through your insurer/benefit provider.

Inside Out Therapy offers Intern services at half the rate of regular services ($75 per session). Interns are with the clinic at certain times during the year. Please reach out if you are interested in starting with an intern, or being placed on a waitlist for our next intern.
